When the Hoover Dam was completed in 1935, it was the highest dam in the world. During construction, thousands of workers set up temporary homes, and casinos and showgirl venues opened on Fremont Street - then the town’s only paved road - to keep them entertained. Among other things, it supplies water and power to Los Angeles and other cities in the Southwest. In 1931, work began on the huge Boulder Dam, later renamed the Hoover Dam, just east of Las Vegas.
